Today I made progress on my new set of Autometer gauges in my 55 wagon. I had the gauges connected by late yesterday,, but didn’t have each gauge securely mounted in the chrome 3-gauge bezel. After a little work, I had the three gauges secured, with two of them wired up and working.

The final gauge that wasn’t working was the voltmeter. I had to find a DC connection that is key switched — I didn’t want one that was “hot” all the time (like my cigarette lighter).

Speaking of the cigarette lighter, I accidentally shorted the socket out, drawing a spark and apparently blowing the fuse. The Chevy has an aftermarket wiring harness and I don’t know exactly where the fuse block is located, but tomorrow I’ll give her a look.

I would prefer to make the power to the cigarette lighter key switched if I can. We’ll see.

I love the look of the new gauges. For starters, the numbers are easy to read from the driver’s seat.

CHURCH PICNIC SATURDAY. The weather report for tomorrow is hot, with a heat warning issued covering the entire weekend.

There’s a 50 percent chance of storms in the afternoon. The car club is supposed to arrive and set up by 4 p.m. I’m not sure if I’ll go or not. If I had to chose between the church picnic and the regular Sunday car cruise, I would prefer to go to the cruise. The way they’re predicting the 100-degree plus heat index both tomorrow and Sunday, plus possible storms, I’m not sure I’m going to wind up attending anything.

Its been one hot sumbitch the last few days. My indoor garage thermometer had 99 degrees, while my old fashioned analog thermometer showed about 102.

The gauge project took more time than I expected, but its done now. Tomorrow I need to wash off the wagon and find the blown fuse.

My therapist asked me yesterday when I thought the 55 Chevy would be “done.” I had to laugh to myself — I don’t think anyone who owns a classic car is ever “done” with it.
